The Fabulous Baker Boys: 2 brothers’ for 15 year partnership as a double-piano nightclub lounge act is rattled by the addition of a feisty (and seductive) singer, who kindles changes in their act, and their relation. Author Kloves’ prompting debut is trendy and self assured, with some awesome scenes and set pieces, although it skimps on tale-and by no means seriously fleshes out Jeff Bridges’ morose personality. The Bridges brothers are impeccably cast, Pfeiffer is superlative. Her misty rendition of “Makin’ Whoopee”, although piano pondered a little, is classic. Cast includes Jeff Bridges, Michelle Pfeiffer, Dude Bridges, Ellie Raab, and Jennifer Tilly. (113 minutes, 1989)
The Last Shot: Amusing charade, empowered by a real tale, telling the story of an FBI man (Baldwin) who makes believe to produce a film so he can trap a mobster with ties to the Teamsters union. Baldwin starts to like his “role” as a movie producer, as he turns his idea into reality. Cast includes Matthew Broderick, Alec Baldwin, Toni Collette, Tony Shalhoub, Calista Flockhart, Tim Blake Nelson, Buck Henry, Ray Liotta, James Rebhorn, Jon Polito, and Pat Morita. (93 minutes, 2004)
South Central: Awakening, well-meaning story of life and desperation in central-city L.A. is alike in topic to (however not almost as powerful as) Boyz in the Hood. Lots of twirls and turns, lucid environment with Helsinki tripling for Moscow harmed somehow by unconvincing romance and protracted finale. Cast includes William Hurt, Lee Marvin, Brian Dennehy, Ian Bannen, Joanna Pacula, and Alexander Knox. (128 minutes, 1983)
