Things that make us laugh, when you think about it, are abundant in life. Some of these things may include the drunken idiot, the typical run-of-the-mill dirty jokes, the slapstick humor, the comedic relief and of course, the usual dry wit including sarcastic or ironic undertones. As a general rule, most if not all of these forms of humor are generally not appropriate for funny wedding speeches.

A funny wedding speech should be remembered for the right reasons (not for you slurring your speech and falling over half way through, see below). Funny wedding speeches always contain some common errors, however, so please, continue reading and don’t become a statistic.

1. Slapstick Humor: This person will either greatly embarrass themselves, or fall over mid-speech and hurt themselves a la Jim Carrey in many of his movies. You would do well not to include any of the above elements in your speech. Come on, there is no excuse, they are fairly self-explanatory. You really do not want to remembered for the wrong reasons, and wake in the following morning having to ask what happened because you don’t remember yourself.

2. The Dirty Jokes: dirty jokes are extremely funny when used in the appropriate setting. This does NOT, however, include a wedding. It would be wise to avoid any reference to anything dirty in your funny wedding speech. After all your conservative grandparents might not enjoy the references or understand them anyway.

3. Sarcasm or Irony: don’t even think about it, even if you believe it will impress the crowd. Don’t try to use irony either – especially if you are unsure of the result it will have on the audience. Chances are something will offend someone. There is a time and place and a wedding is neither of those.

4. Comedic relief: Save the comedic relief to the experts like Leno and Letterman. Comedic relief usually comes in the form of a one liner. However, unless you know what you are doing, you will end up with a silence and that ever-embarrassing throat clear in the crowd.

5. Drunken antics: Getting drunk and acting like an idiot can be hilarious on television or the big screen. It can even be funny in real life. However, save the drunken behavior for the bucks night. A wedding is supposed to be a civil event, so remain in control and out of trouble by limiting your alcohol intake.
