Many people are not aware that many big name brands of cosmetics contain ingredients that are extremely suspect. Now a new study has warned about dangerous cosmetics and the effects that these products can have on teenage girls.
A recent study found lead in lipsticks. Over 50% of lipsticks tested had lead in them and there are other nasty and unsafe ingredients in our cosmetics.
Isn’t lead really dangerous? Yes it is and it shouldn’t be in our lipsticks, but the FDA doesn’t regulate it so it’s there. And it’s the same with skin care products and anti aging products and personal and body care and beauty products too.
And of course when you put on that product some of it soaks into your skin, especially with some skin care products like moisturizers, and if it goes into your skin it goes into your bloodstream.
And it goes in because our skin is porous and what goes on mostly goes in and ends up in our bodes. That’s fine it the ingredients are harmless but lead? That’s not harmless.
And there’s a new study now which suggests that there are good reason why our teenage girls should be using safe cosmetics rather than the big brand dangerous cosmetics that so many use now. Here’s a quote from the Campaign For Safe Cosmetics.
“Laboratory tests reveal adolescent girls across America are contaminated with chemicals commonly used in cosmetics and body care products.”
That’s scary. It gets worse and makes worrying reading for any parent of a teen who uses cosmetics regularly, and who doesn’t? Most in fact use more than the average woman.
The Environmental Working Group found chemicals from 4 different families of chemicals (phthalates, parabens, triclosan and musks) in the urine of girls between the ages of 14 and 20 who were tested in the study.
Some of these chemicals were found in the urine of every single girl tested.
And teenage girls are growing very fast, so the last thing they need is to be adding nasty chemicals to their bodies.
These chemicals are considered to be capable of altering hormones, and so I wonder how many teenage girls using cosmetics and skin care products and possibly acne products know that they are taking a risk with their hormones at this time.
What will be the result of these possible risks to the reproductive health of young girls? Who knows, but I for one don’t want my daughter to find out.
There seem to be risks to our girls but no one really knows the possible consequences.
That’s a matter of concern for parents and girls, but there are alternatives. There are excellent companies making safe cosmetics and safe skin care products that work very well indeed and don’t contain dangerous ingredients. So no risks to our daughters.
But these aren’t the big brand name companies, they’re small niche companies that can’t possibly compete with the big brands on marketing, and don’t try, so you never see them advertising on TV. And you won’t find any of their products on the shelf of your local store.
But if you search you can find small companies making excellent and safe cosmetics and also safe natural skin care products that are extremely good, and better quality than the big brands.
So you might decide it’s not worth taking risks with the health of your daughters, (or yours). Use safe cosmetics and natural skin care products that work extremely well and have no dangerous ingredients in them.
