Is Silicone or Saline Better?
60 viewsEach breast augmentation surgeon has his or her preference. Some prefer silicone implants purely for aesthetic reasons. Silicon breast implants tend to have a more natural texture and over all natural look to them. Others are leery of the risks associated with silicone (see below)
Saline Implants:
Breast implants filled with a saline solution are a newer form of implant and come with some advantages over their silicone counterparts, like the ability to inflate or deflate the implant while in the breast without the need for revision surgery, allowing for complete client satisfaction before after breast implants.
Currently there are two kinds of saline implants on the market. The standard model is your basic implant that comes in a set shape and size. The other is a fresh take, with the added feature of a small valve, cosmetic surgeons have the ability to insert the implants into the breast and then fill or decrease the size of the breast before the patients eyes, insuring the perfect look. This also means that should you want bigger or smaller breasts as time goes on, you simply see your physician and voila.
Though complications can arise from these implants they are fewer and further between than silicone. There have been studies and cases where bacteria and mould have been found in the solution, putting the one with implants at risk should the implant leak or rupture. This can cause problem for the repertory system as well as number of nasty complication due to infection. Should a saline implant rupture it is much easier to detect than other implants.
Implants made from Silicone
Outer shells of implants made from silicone and are reported to be strong and hold up to a great deal or wear and tear. Unlike saline these implants are made in a particular size and shape. There are every size, shape (tear, round or oval), textures and the shells can be thicker or thinner.
Recently Silicone implants have been re approved in the USA stating: that there isnt enough definitive evidence that links silicone breast implants to breast cancers and neurological disorders. Never the less other research from around the world lists the following risks involved with having silicone implants:
Ruptures in silicon implants are harder to detect and involve and extra cost each year to check them (they are checked using and MRI which can cost several hundred to thousands every year)
When a silicone implants ruptures there may be no physical signs as the silicon leaks into the surrounding breast tissue.
High level of platinum in silicon implants lead to short term memory loss and may lead to the loss of motor skills and has been linked to several neurological disorders.
For cosmetic reason reasons silicone implants are popular because they lend themselves to a more natural look and feel. They do however have a worse rate of rupture and capsular contraction (that is when the tissue surrounding the breast implant hardens up and it can be painful).
The rate of capsular contraction and rate of deflation is higher in silicone implants.
