When I tell people that I run insurance websites (though I\’m not a licensed insurance agent), they inevitably ask me who the best car insurance company is.

These days, car insurance is a necessity. Most places in the world require you to have it if you drive. Failing to insure yourself can result in financial loss and a criminal record.

A lot of people just look for the cheapest policy and do not give nearly enough thought to what the policy covers or if it really is right for them. When you are comparing different insurance plans, do not fall into the trap of choosing the cheapest policy because it is the cheapest. Instead, find a plan that really is right for you and the way that you drive.

Instead, here are a couple of methods that can be very helpful for finding out if the insurance company your with is any good. The first is to go to your state department\’s website, go to the insurance section and find the consumer complaint ratios. It can take a little bit of poking around to find this information because on the majority of government websites I\’ve been to, usability and intuitive navigation didn\’t seem to be a priority.

You can also get different quotes on increasing or decreasing your coverages or adding or deleting drivers whatever the case may be. You may be looking at a large increase by adding a teen driver and you want to find out what the effect on your monthly premiums will be.

Most, if not all, insurance companies will offer you a lower rate if you are a good driver with a squeaky clean driving record. However, some insurers will provide you with more reasonable rates each year if you remain a good driver with a clean record.

However, there are truly independent third party reviews from company\’s like J.D. Power and Associates and Consumer Reports.

Another important part of a policy is the deductible. A lower deductible will usually result in you paying a higher premium. However, some drivers choose to go with a higher deductible because they have a history of good driving and feel that they are at a low risk for getting into an accident. If your driving record is spotty at best, do not go for the higher deductible.
