Decorating can become frustrating. You know what you want to create in your mind it\’s hard to make it happen. It might have been a picture that you liked or a certain wallpaper that caught your eye and inspired your look. Your not sure where it came from but you are excited to get started. What you ended up with is not what you originally planned out and now you feel as though you will have to settle with what it there.

Don\’t worry about it anymore. You can choose several different ways to approach this. If you can picture the object that brought this look to your attention you can probably stencil the idea by freehand. Then you can paint the image that you created onto any surface and then transfer it. You can use stencil for almost any style or image you want to create.

Stencils can be very small, like leaves or stylized marks such as spirals that you can use to decorate your walls or ceilings in groups or just here and there, as you see fit. They can also be huge – if you are making the stencil then you are in control. I would only suggest that, while for small designs paper is fine as the material out of which to cut the stencil, if you are going to go for a large design you would be better off using a stiff plastic or wood. You can create a stencil several feet across if you feel the need to. Just find the picture and the stencil material and get started. You can even find a small design and enlarge it without losing the proportions by drawing a grid over the original and then drawing a proportionate but obviously much larger grid over the stencil material. Then copy each square of the original design onto the corresponding square on the stencil material and you will have the design marked out perfectly.

You can also use area rugs to blend in the theme you are going for. An area rug can blend in with your stencil design. Try to search for a rug that offers reflected shapes. You can go a different way and use the rug to accent or highlight the colors you chose in your stencil. Make sure they do not clash.

When it comes to decorating your home you should not be limited by other people\’s ideas. It is your home – it should show off your ideas and be a way of showcasing your own inspirations.
