Fencing can bring about the much needed privacy and security we want in our homes. Not only that, wood fencing in particular, can also give the house and its surrounding landscape the right touch of rustic charm to complete its look.

Wooden fences are designed in many styles and with different materials, so you need to choose a fence that fits your own landscaping and has the functionality that you also need in your home. The function of the fence is its primary reason so don’t ignore this.

Depending on the homeowner’s end goal and the style of the house itself, wood fences can sometimes fill the need for both form and functionality. For instance, if your chief purpose is to have a semblance of privacy or to add visual appeal to your home, there are many wooden fence styles that can address these requirements.

However if you need a lot of security, then you will probably need to consider a metal or stone fence. These are much more secure, although the aesthetic appearance is not as good as the wood effect.

However, when the form of the fence is the main concern, you need to look at the wood fence designs.

Pick out the type of wood fence that would best complement the style and make of your home as well as the general landscaping design that it has. Here are the basic wood fence designs and the house styles where they would have the most appeal:

Picket style fence. This is best suited for cottage style housing and gives a great compliment to these types of gardens and landscaped homes. You can also find these in a variety of types. One of the most popular is the dog-ear spaced picket, French gothic spaced picket, and the pointed top spaced picket.

Split-rail wood fence. These types of wood fences look great in ranch-style homes. Also, if you have a garden landscaped in the style of the south-western US, then this will work very well. The best wood to use for this type of fence is the Western red cedar wood.

Log wood fence. If you have a house with a rustic feel, then I would recommend the log wood fence design. You can find these with vertical and horizontal panels, but the vertical ones are best.

If the functionality is the top priority of the fence then you need to consider the following wooden fences.

These are the best wood fences to choose from if you want a practical type of fence. They give you both privacy and durability.

Stockade fence. These fences have vertical slates without any spaces in between. This gives you a lot of privacy from the outside. The tops of the slats are pointed so you also have a nice design element incorporated into the fence.

Solid board fence. This style of fencing is also great for privacy as it gives a complete barrier to sight. Not only this but it also gives you a noise barrier as well as some security. If you want to improve on the design features, then you can also add latticework to this fence.

Lattice fencing. These are now very popular and give a good amount of privacy also. While giving privacy, they also allow for some sunlight and fresh air to come through. The slats are laid out diagonally in diamond-shaped spaces, however if you want square-shaped openings they can be placed vertically and horizontally also.
