The Internet has brought incredible benefits and convenience to our lives and the way we communicate. Like everything else, anything with benefits also has drawbacks and the Internet has prompted us to increase our concerns for keeping our children safe on the Internet.
There are parents who are unaware of the dangers the Internet poses to children and then other parents who have become immune to the benefits the Internet due to increased publicity on cyber crime and the practices of cyber criminals.
Then you have the children who are unaware of the dangers of the Internet and do not talk with their parents about what they are doing online. Others talk to their parents but leave out some of the details and then some leave out all of the details regarding their actions online.
Striking a Balance
Get started by understanding who you are dealing with and what predators and pedophile’s methods are.
Cyber Safety Seminars
Get a hold of your local police department and find out if they can direct you so classes on cyber safety. If they are unable, use the internet for good and enroll in an online course on the subject.
Cyber Crimes
Be proactive listen look and learn the predators course of action.
Consider the Benefits:
Learn and consider the benefits that the Internet has to offer to your child with respect to education and communication.
Familiarize yourself
Learn the basics of the internet, don’t be in the dark do some research on email, instant messaging and the social networks such as Facebook and Myspace.
Monitor Your Child’s Activity:
Monitor your child’s online activity and find out where they are going and what they are doing online. Encourage them to be open with you about what they are doing and where they are going online. If you are better informed, then you can educate your children on the dangers of the Internet.
Talk to your kids
Make sure they know you like the internet and that you a for using it, but compel them to talk freely of what they do online.
Private Information:
Your children must know that they should never give out any personal information. Most children lack the understanding that when they post something online it is not only available to their friends, but also any evil eye that wants to view it. Posting information online is often just an open invititation to criminals.
Beware of Impostors:
Make sure your children understand the anonymity of the Internet and as a result anyone can pose as an impostor.
Proper communication
Talk with your children about the proper ways to communicate online. Communication on the Internet does not involve body language. Encourage your child to review their messages before they send them to prevent any possibility of miscommunication.
Uncomfortable Contact:
Direct your children to let you know immediately if they feel uneasy or frighted on the internet.
Cyberbullying:
Teach your child that bullying another online can result in legal consequences and suggest alternative ways to resolve peer conflicts. Equipping your child with these skills will pay off in the real world as well.
Lastly, communicate, have a family meeting and discuss when and who will use the computer, also decide a location of where you will set up your system. When this has all been decided install a internet filter to ensure the protection of the young minds that are about to explore the world wide web.
